Editorial & Mentoring Services

Do you want a personal, focused guide to making your writing the best it can be?

Are you looking for an editor/mentor who is honest, supportive, committed and experienced?

Different writers require different levels of support. No matter what stage of development you’re at, I can help.

Here are my packages:

MS assessment 1 – a read, with annotation & a full written report

MS assessment 2 – a read, with annotation & a shorter (bullet points) report

Brainstorming – in-person, phone or Skype sessions are available as add-ons to a MS assessment, or as a stand-alone service.

Mentoring – tailored to your individual needs, running on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis. As well as commenting on your Work-in-Progress, I can help troubleshoot creative challenges, brainstorm ideas, set achievable targets, boost confidence and help you to develop a sustainable writing practice. Price set after discussion.

I’ve been working with emerging and multi-published authors for over nine years and as an author for eight, with experience as a journalist and copywriter prior to that. I offer bespoke structural and developmental editorial services, looking at everything from:

  • story arc
  • character development
  • pace
  • tension
  • points of craft like show don’t tell.

I’ve helped coach writers to competition shortlistings, representation and publication.

Here’s what some of my clients say:

‘Laura will tell you where your manuscript is working and where it isn’t. In particular she gives excellent advice on maintaining he right ‘tone’ throughout the story, something that can make the difference between an okay book, and a really great one.’ JF Kirwan, author of Nadia Laksheva thriller series.

‘Laura’s practical and emotional support was invaluable at each stage of writing my book from the first draft to the final edit. Through her I finally found faith in myself as a writer.’ Min Day, author, currently in conversation with an agent.

I wouldn’t hesitate to use Laura’s editing skills for my next novel and would highly recommend her services to other authors.’  Susan Griffin, author.

‘Her guidance taught me the fundamental principles of writing technique without stifling creativity. Her personal approach establishes a relationship of trust and respect. My novel would not be as far advanced today if not for Laura’s outstanding mentoring.’ Merril Haeusler, writer

I have a group of amazing authors who offer advice and support (lucky me). And I know that price can be a barrier (it was for me). I offer pay-what-you-can for a limited number of under-represented writers. If this is you, mention it in your mail. I don’t ask for ‘proof’.

If you’d like to know a little more about mentoring this article might be helpful.

I look forward to hearing from you!
